Retail Marketplace Event WiFi

Retail Property Marketplace (RPM) is Australia’s only dedicated event for the retail property industry. Australia’s leading shopping centre owners, landlords, retail technology providers and fit-out companies met with over 400 retailers to showcase their assets and available locations to discuss their expansion plans. The event took place on 15 September 2022 in the Overseas Passenger Terminal, overlooking the iconic Sydney Opera House.

Connectivity Issue

The Sydney Overseas Passenger Terminal does not have a public wireless network available for events. The event organiser ConnexU, engaged Powertec to install a temporary event WiFi Network to cover the 681m2 event area and give the event exhibitors and attendee’s the best WiFi connectivity experience.

Solution

A detailed WiFi prediction report was produced by the Powertec Solutions team using the Ekahau best practices.

Two Cellferno’s supplied the wireless WAN connection to the network via LTE connection. One Cellferno used the Telstra macro network and the other Cellferno used the Optus macro network to assist with load balancing and redundancy.

Two networks were created to limit the data usage on the network, minimising congestion for optimal user experience. Network one was created for public Wi-Fi, limiting the data usage to 5GB max with throttled speed. The second network was supplied to the vendors providing an unlimited supply of data with no throttling.

Installation Challenges

The vendor’s booths were estimated to cause 2dB loss with all walls around the bar area also causing 3dB loss (assuming they were drywall structure). The location of access points was working on the assumption that cabling can reach the installed locations. It was advised to run CAT 6 cable along the wall if possible. If not, we recommended running the CAT6 cable along the ground at the base of the wall taped to the ground to avoid any risk of tripping on the cable.

The proposed installation was successfully implemented with the WAN covering the 681m2 exhibition area and the 2 networks achieving higher than anticipated speeds. The general admission Attendee Network achieved download speeds at over 70 Mbs, while the exclusive Exhibitor Network achieved download speeds at over 150 Mbs.
