Loads / Terminators

What is an RF Load used for?

Also known as Dummy Loads or Terminators, a Load absorbs and dissipates incident RF energy present at the port it is connected to. It prevents leaving any unused ports ‘open’ which would ordinarily throw the RF Passive out of balance and result in harmful reflections.

RF Loads are used to cap off unused ports on Hybrids, Power Dividers, and Directional Couplers in order to maintain VSWR. They are also used extensively in laboratory testing.

The key electrical parameter is the Load’s Power Rating, given in Watts. Most of Powertec’s repeater technologies are low power devices, leading to those with 1 and 5 Watt ratings being most popular. Larger DAS systems naturally use larger Loads commensurate with the higher power levels used.
