WiFi Extenders & WiFi Boosters
A WiFi extender - also sold as a WiFi booster or range extender - picks up an existing wireless signal, amplifies it and rebroadcasts it into areas the router cannot reach on its own. It is the simplest way to clear dead spots without running new cabling.
Powertec supplies WiFi extenders and WiFi boosters to resellers, installers and integrators across Australia.
WiFi extender or WiFi booster - is there a difference?
In practice the terms describe the same device. "WiFi booster" is the phrase most customers use, "range extender" is the manufacturer's term, and "WiFi extender" sits between the two. All three refer to hardware that rebroadcasts an existing signal rather than creating a new one.
Choosing a WiFi extender
Coverage area is the first consideration. A single-room unit will not serve a two-storey building or a site with thick masonry walls. Then check band support: dual-band and WiFi 6 units handle more simultaneous devices and hold throughput better at distance. Finally consider placement, since an extender needs a strong enough source signal at its own location to be worth installing.
WiFi extenders compared with mesh
An extender is the lower-cost option for one or two problem areas. Where coverage needs to be seamless across a whole building, a mesh system usually performs better because devices hand off between nodes without dropping the connection.
