IoT antennas are those suitable for operating on the major IoT protocols in use around the world. IoT protocols are either cellular based, using NB-IoT and LTE-M, or ISM-based technologies which use the “unlicenced” (class licenced) bands in the 868, 915, and 923 MHz frequency ranges such as LoRa and Sigfox.
Unlike some antenna types which are focused on the best possible Peak Gain, IoT device antennas, which are almost always omnidirectional, instead focus on Radiated Efficiency or Average Gain. An ‘efficient’ antenna is one which radiates or conducts the greatest amount of RF energy, measured as a percentage. Peak Gain is rarely a relevant consideration as large-scale IoT deployments do not have the luxury of focusing RF energy in a specific direction.
Good quality IoT antennas are also tuned to perform best on specific bands, with the vast majority of IoT communication happening inside the lower 700 to 900 MHz frequency range due to its exceptional propagation and deep in-building penetration characteristics.
Due to the very large quantities in play, IoT antennas must also strike a delicate balance between electrical / mechanical performance and economics. With an extensive background in IoT development, Powertec provide IoT project advice and consulting services, helping your team to navigate the challenging world of wireless.
