What exactly is Cel-Fi?

Cel-Fi is Nextivity’s brand of self-configuring, environmentally aware, indoor coverage solutions. A Cel-Fi system consists of two devices. The Window Unit (WU) is placed in the area with the strongest received signal from the carrier network (signal levels as low as -110 dBm are acceptable). The WU comprises a transmitter and receiver which communicates with the cell tower. The Coverage Unit (CU) is placed in the center of the home, communicates wirelessly with the WU and “lights up” the interior of the house with significantly enhanced signal levels, thus enabling better quality calls and greater data throughput. The exception to this is Cel-Fi GO which uses a one box system and requires indoor and outdoor antennas.

What size coverage area can I expect with the Cel-Fi repeater?

Typically a 900m² indoor coverage area, depending upon the input signal and internal structure of the building. Cel-Fi GO will offere a similar coverage when the antennas are completely isolated from each other, however in a vehcile setup where the antennas are close then coverage will be down to a few metres.

Does the Cel-Fi support GSM, 3G or 4G?

The Cel-Fi RS2 supports 3G only. The PRO model will support both 3G and 4G at the same time. GO supports both 3G and 4G, however only one band at a time is boosted. None of the units support GSM.

What frequency does the Cel-Fi support?

There are several different combinations according to the model. Check the indivudual model page for the frequencie supported..

What data speeds does Cel-Fi support?

UMTS Data, HSDPA, HSUPA, HSPA+, DC-HSPA and LTE depending on the model. Cel-Fi does not support MIMO.

Does Cel-Fi support MIMO?

Cel-Fi does not support MIMO and therefore has only a single external antenna port.

Can the Cel-Fi system be used with multiple mobile service providers?

No, the Cel-Fi system is locked to the one mobile carrier. We are currently working with several mobile carriers to offer this product on their networks.

How many mobile devices can be connected to the Cel-Fi at one time?

The actual number of devices that the Cel-Fi system can support can vary depending on user location, the type of use and signal strength. The Cel-Fi system is expected to support the needs of a small office/family residence.

Does the Cel-Fi system improve mobile voice calls as well and mobile internet at the same time?

Yes, live network tests conducted by wireless carriers have shown that our systems can improve data speeds by 200% to 300% (and many times more). It will support voice and internet at the same time.

What frequency is used to communicate between the two units (the Window Unit and the Coverage Unit)?

Cel-Fi uses channels from both the U-NII-1 (either 5.15-5.25 GHz OR 5.25-5.35GHz) and the U-NII-2 block (5.47-5.725 GHz) to communicate between the Window Unit and the Coverage Unit.

How far apart can the Window Unit (WU) and the Coverage Unit (CU) be placed?

Distances vary depending on the path loss of the walls between the units, but in general the distance is between 20 and 80m. This is dependent on how many walls or obstructions are between the two units. The maximum line of site is around 80m.

Can I use an external antenna with the Cel-Fi System?

Yes, the Cel-Fi has an SMA Female port for an external antenna on the Window Unit. The Cel-Fi GO require both an indoor and outdoor antenna.

Are the Windows Units locked to the Coverage Units?

Yes, the Window Unit is locked to the Coverage Unit and cannot be used with other Cel-Fi systems.

Can you have mulitple coverage units connected to one window unit?

No. the window and coverage units are a married pair and you cannot add additional coverage units to the system.

Can you install multiple independent Cel-Fi systems in the same building?

Yes, you can install several Cel-fi systems in the same building without them interfering with each other. They will operate independently and the coverage area can overlap.

Can you daisy chain Cel-Fi systems to extend the coverage area?

Yes, you can daisy chain two Cel-fi systems in the same building. You can only have a maximum of two separate Cel-Fi systems to do this. Daisy chain means you can use the signal disbursed by the first Cel-Fi system and use that as your input signal for a second Cel-Fi system.

Does a Cel-Fi system have to be activated or provisioned on the mobile operator’s network?

No, Cel-Fi products do not require network activation or provisioning.

Do mobile devices have to be registered to the Cel-Fi system?

No, Cel-Fi products do not require the mobile devices to be registered with the system. Connection is automatic.

Can I move the Cel-Fi system to a different address or location?

Yes, the Cel-Fi can be used anywhere there is 3G mobile coverage for your carrier. If moving address you may need to notify your service provider or retailer so they have a record of where the system is being used. The Cel-Fi for Optus has an additional feature that locks the unit to the mobile towers in a specific area after 32 hours of use.

Experience has shown that traditional repeater products often cause significant degradation to mobile network quality. How is Cel-Fi different?

Cel-Fi utilizes an intelligent processor to actively adjust to the network environment. It uses multiple techniques including automatic gain control, real-time path loss analysis, and uplink signal gating to ensure that it never degrades the quality of the macro network signal or artificially raises the noise floor of the node B.

If I have an external antenna connected to the Cel-Fi, is there way to know if the external antenna is being used by the Cel-Fi?

When using the external antenna with the RS2 systems the status LED on the Cel-Fi turns from green to orange, indicating that the external antenna was chosen as the best antenna. On the PRO model this information can be obtained by using the WAVE smartphone App.

For some reason the signal bars on my iPhone do not increase as much as my other mobile devices.

This is due to the iPhone having a different method of calculating signal strength than most other mobile devices. Signal strength indicators take into account two factors; received power level and channel loading (Ec/lo). The iPhone puts a large amount of weight on Ec/lo than most other devices and less on signal strength. Even though the Cel-Fi is increasing the signal strength, the iPhone signal bars may not increase. By putting the iPhone in field test mode and then tapping the signal bars you will get an actual signal strength reading.

I have an E6 Error on my coverage unit display.

This is the location lock error. Optus units have a location lock feature that locks them into a location. If moved to a different location they will not operate and display this error code. Call customer support on 07 5577 0500 to get them unlocked from the previous base station over the phone.
