Business Profile

Architecturally designed CSIRO Building

The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is the federal government agency for scientific research in Australia.  It is an amazing entity.

Their role is to carry out scientific research to assist Australian industry and the interests of the Australian community.  They are a leading organisation in the world in research and dissemination of information about science and technology.

Some of the amazing outcomes from the work undertaken by CSIRO include:

  • A group of five CSIRO scientists invented wireless LAN technology, otherwise known as Wi-Fi.
  • The Hendra vaccine
  • Polymer banknotes with 3 levels of security
  • The permanent pleat for fabrics
  • Extended wear contact lenses

Business Needs

After a 7 year program of works, the CSIRO team moved into a 14,000m2 4 floor, bespoke facility in Black Mountain, Canberra ACT.   The new building now houses the science research facility and associated staff in a fit-for-purpose area that better supports discoveries of the future.

There was a requirement for certain specification of insulation in some areas particularly where there were potential bio-hazards.

Unfortunately when new buildings and houses are constructed, the materials that insulate best and provide the most structural strength can often be the worst offenders causing reduced indoor coverage.  Materials that affect the indoor signal by reflecting and absorbing the RF (Radio Frequency) can include foil backed insulation, Aluminium epoxy cladding, metal/tin/Colorbond roofing, garage roller doors, concrete, brick and copper wiring.

Window tinting is often responsible for reflecting the RF signal away from where you want it and even mesh security screens on windows and doors can block mobile signal.

The insulation requirements resulted in minimal mobile coverage within the building.  CSIRO Procurement spoke to communications expert Greg Baker, Principal from Transfibre in ACT to improve their mobile coverage by stages within the building.

Blackhawk Omni High Gain Antennas 698-2700 6dBi

7 x Blackhawk Omni Antennas 698 – 2700: The Blackhawk Omni High Gain Antenna is designed for versatility, for use in a variety of environments, in low to high signal areas and mounted in almost any location. The Blackhawk Omni High Gain Antenna will operate with all mobile carriers regardless of the frequency they operate on.  With a 6 dBi gain and supporting all bands, this antenna will provide the perfect solution for voice and data applications where high gain antennas are required.

6 x Pulse Larsen DAS Ultrathin Clear Antennas & Reflectors:  The ultimate in high spec combined with beautiful design makes this internal antenna perfect for architectural spaces.

10 x CEL-FI GO Stationary: The approved CEL-FI GO for Telstra Smart Repeater is the ideal product to boost and distribute a 3G/4G mobile signal within a building, it supports voice and mobile internet for multiple mobile devices.

The Solution

The Transfibre team worked with CSIRO and their Electronics Engineer to do the planning. Pretesting of all the antennas was done before install to ensure the best position to gain the best outcome in boosting capacity.

Stage 1 install was to improve coverage in the office areas of the building.  Due to the architectural design of the building, Ultrathin Pulse Larsen DAS antennas were the perfect choice for this lovely building. The install took around 1 week for 2 men due to the size of the building and area of coverage required.

Business Benefits

CSIRO team happy with outcome with 2nd stage being implemented now.
