North Stradbroke Island Sand Mine

The purpose of this project was primarily a hardware refresh to replace aging equipment to ensure a smooth handover of the site over the next few years. Due to the reduced capacity of the site and the remoteness of the locations, multiple options were floated before a final solution proposal was implemented.

About North Stradbroke Island:

North Stradbroke Island is the world’s second-largest sand island covering an area of 275.2km2.  Although it comprises almost entirely of sand, North Stradbroke Island exhibits a wide range of habitats, each supporting its own assortment of plants and animals. The most important habitats along the eastern, or ocean, side of the Island consist of open beaches, frontal dunes and the 18 Mile Swamp, together with a small area of rocky headland at Point Lookout. The western side of the Island is characterized by mangroves and tidal swamps, with a series of lakes and lagoons between the dunes, the most notable being Blue Lake (Karboora) and Brown Lake (Bummiera).

North Stradbroke Island Sand Mine Challenge:

The current sand mine operator was in need of an IP upgrade as their existing wideband service was unable to perform to the desired standard. Working with the sand mine operators IT partners, Powertec was engaged to design and install a reliable IP network across multiple locations of the North Stradbroke Island sand mine.

The Altai A2 offers a cost-effective solution for high-capacity point-to-point and point-to-multipoint infrastructure backhaul for Mobile Network Operators and Internet Service Providers, smart cities, building to building bridging, and video surveillance applications.

Solution:

After planning and assessment, it was decided that a 4G WAN connection was to be implemented with interconnectivity between sites relying on Fibre Optic/ 5Ghz Wireless Backhaul. Several key areas around the site also suffered from poor Telstra cellular coverage causing calls to drop out along with poorly performing 4G data services. Cel-Fi Go units were to be installed in key strategic locations to provide reliable voice and data services over the Telstra network.

  • Wireless Interconnectivity-P2P
  • Provide Wi-Fi Coverage
  • Switch Replacement
  • Fibre Optic Augmentation
  • Server Installation
  • Patch Cord Installation
  • 4G Router Installation
  • Rack Compression

Business Benefit:

The solutions implemented ensured continued connectivity and successful business operations in a changing operational environment.
