The Lower Murray Urban and Rural Water Authority (LMW) operates along the Murray River, from Kerang to the South Australian border, in the municipalities of Gannawarra, Swan Hill and Mildura. Providing this extensive region with urban water and sewerage treatment, supply and disposal; river quality water for stock and irrigation; and collection and disposal of subsurface irrigation drainage. The core business is to meet the present and future needs of their customers and community by providing reliable and secure water services.

INSTALLATION CHALLENGES

Due to international shipping delays, the initial product selected was not available so an alternative solution was needed.

The UR35 cellular routers are used in the sewerage pump stations where the water level probes monitor the levels and communicate through the UR35 units and notify the staff on call that they have a potential sewer spill and advises via a message indicating a spill.

Having so many pump stations the economic UR35 allows the process to be automated and rolled out across multiple sites saving time and money.

THE ISSUE

With the rollout of the NBN broadband access network replacing the existing Telstra fixed phone network, several of the LMW sites alarm networks were being put at risk.

When there is a power outage scenario at any of the sites they need critical alarms to call out in an emergency that would require staff to attend site, but with the NBN network relying on mains power to operate it is not a reliable solution in this situation, we had to find another solution.

THE OUTCOME

Once having these units were installed, we were able to do some testing to ensure that the alarming systems functioned correctly, calling out through the units by simulating various emergency situations such as a power outage.

After having the units installed for a couple of weeks, we have found that they have been working well and haven’t had any issues.

THE SOLUTION

Using the UR35 Cellular Router with a sim card installed we are able to use the mobile network in an emergency where the is a power outage. The sites run on a battery backup so the alarming system will operate during these scenarios. By powering the Router off the battery back up we are still able to use this as a phone connection that allows us to get the critical alarms to the necessary staff.
