An N or N-Type RF adapter is a durable, semi-weatherproof coaxial RF interconnector designed for medium to high-frequency applications, generally up to either 3 or 6 GHz, and up to 18 GHz with precision versions. They are used to connect RF equipment with differing connectors. Despite being designed in the 1950s, they still remain in common use.
The N connector can be identified by its larger, threaded interface. The male connector (plug) has a distinctive medium-sized hex/knurled nut with an inner pin. The female connector (jack) features a receptacle with an outer conducting shell for threading. Some adapters have a textured outer nut (knurled) to assist with hand tightening.
Installation requires screwing the adapter onto the corresponding RF connectors of the device, ensuring proper alignment and avoiding over-tightening to prevent damage. Hex nut variants can be tightened by hand or torque spanner, whereas knurled variants can only be tightened by hand.
