A Dalby Demountable, Cel-Fi GO and a Robustel Modem

Business Profile

With the launch of the Cel-Fi GO, a number of units were provided to Powertec Partners to test and provide feedback for specific situations where we could see a requirement for the device. One of the situations we had tested recently was in a relocatable Tri Office building (or Donga) near Dalby, a town in the Darling Downs region of QLD, around 200km North/Northwest of the capital Brisbane.

A Tri Office is a relocatable tin/metal building usually found on construction or mining sites. These buildings are used for a number of activities including offices and accommodation.

Product/s Used

1 x Cel-Fi GO stationery model – provides 3G and 4G signal boosting capabilities for use in custom building applications. It operates on the Telstra bandwidths 3G 850 and 4G 700/1800 (one frequency at a time). The Cel-Fi GO mobile model provides service for trucks and vehicles. The GO is the first legal device of its kind available in Australia.

2 x Internal Paddle Coverage Antennas

1 x Outdoor Omni Antenna

1 x Robustel GoRugged R2000 3G/4G – a rugged cellular router offering state-of-the-art mobile connectivity for machine to machine (M2M) applications.

Business Needs

The issue with the camp was two-fold in that improvement was needed for both mobile coverage using the Cel-Fi GO and improving Wi-Fi utilising the Robustel GoRugged R2000.

Whilst relocatable buildings are perfect as quick and easy building blocks in a challenging mining environment, because of their contruction they have the unfortunate side effect of acting as a faraday cage, reflecting RF signals away, particularly impacting on mobile signal.

We find this a big problem within Australia where our environment can be very harsh – the materials that insulate the best and provide the most structural strength can often be the worst offenders causing reduced indoor coverage.

Testimonial/Commentary

“The client was able to stream video / music videos in full HD as well as download PDF files and apps, all with good quality and good speeds.” Duncan Campbell, Principal Clan Campbell.

This temporary installation was managed by Duncan Campbell from Clan Campbell Digital Communications based in Burpengary QLD 4505.  To contact Duncan for more information email dpc@dlcampbell.id.au or call 0422 837 591.

The Solution

Duncan from Clan Campbell Digital Communications mounted all equipment in the Communications Room situated at the end of the Administration Office building. The Comms Room is dust-proof and climate controlled.

One wall antenna was located in the Comms Room with the other located approx. 10 metres away in the Administration section of the same office. The Robustel R2000 was also placed in the Comms Room picking up 3G from the wall antenna.

A mast antenna was set up at the top of the Administration building to access mobile signal from the closest tower.

With the solution installed, the relocatable building can be located anywhere between 30 and 70km from the main town of Dalby. Typically the 3G Telstra coverage at these distances are 1 to 2 bars constant (-98 to -103db), and nothing within the metal surroundings of the building.

With the solution installed, the inside of the building recorded a constant 4 to 5 bars (-58 to -78db) and 3G data speeds @ 764kb were achieveable – even with all the metal doors and window shutters closed.
